....I was wrong, but in a good way.
First let me start of with what this book isn't: a self help/business book. I admit that I am a book junkie, just ask my wife. I prefer self help/business/leadership. Something with a chance to improve my life. That is one of the main reasons I bought this book (as well as to support a brand that I know and like). There are a few random/rare anecdotes on business such as mixing with friends, where business is done best, and the struggles that it takes to start a company. But they are rare, and as I would find out, not the intention for this book.
This book is a collection of journal entries and emails that are formatted to layout out the story of GoRuck, specifically Jason's life in turmoil in 2010. It is a real and raw account of a man's struggle to get his life together after serving our country in the Special Forces. It is a love story with his wife and their tortured souls as they struggled through their divorce. Romeo and Juliet lived a less complicated and less passionate love story.
The unlikely hero in this story is a dog named Java. He was the tie that kept this together. He connected his masters, he was the best friend to a go that felt he was failing at every turn, he was the model that this new brand would be built on.
The one thing that is clear is that Jason loves deep, even to a level of detriment. He wanted to go old school and start GoRuck by traveling the 48 continuous states to meet with vendors and to promote his line first hand. He wanted his brand to be just as American as Harley Davidson, beers at a campfire, and hotdogs at the ballpark. He shares is camaraderie, his worries, and his pains as he tries to figure it all out.
Knowing how far GoRuck has come, it is refreshing to see the early days. I'm not a love story fan and I typically only do biographies in audio format, but this book had me gripping to pages, underlining and screaming, feeling sorry for the situations, and ultimately appreciating that I didn't have to go through the same struggles. I hugged my wife afterwards. So it's fair to say that I enjoyed this love story (ironically I was more excited about rushing back to finish the book than the last couple miles of a trail race I was doing at the time).
I recommend the book if you are interested in seeing this authentic side of life. Just like a well used ruck, the beauty is in the scars. It's not a perfect love story, it is a REAL one.
